Mind, Body, & Soul Integrative Counseling is the therapy practice of Marcy Shrum, LISW.
Intention
Promote emotional and physical wellness through the creation of a safe space by creating a meaningful therapeutic relationship. My hope for my clients who are struggling with past trauma, present stressors and mental health challenges is to experience an increase in self-acceptance and personal awareness, feelings of presence in the hear and now, and a higher quality of relationship to self and with important individuals in their lives.

Education
I earned a Bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University in Child and Family Services in 1997. I worked in social work and with families for the next 15 yrs before returning to the University of Iowa in 2011 to begin earning a Master’s degree in Social Work. I completed the degree in 2014 and began working at a local agency in the Des Moines area. When an individual earns a Master’s degree in Iowa, the next step to provide therapy is to successfully pass a licensing exam and then obtain a license from the State of Iowa. At that point, a Licensed Master’s level social worker can provide therapy under the supervision of an Independently Licensed Social Worker. After accumulating a specified number of hours of supervision where one’s skills are monitored and evaluated for competency, another Clinical exam is required to earn the Independent License designation from the State of Iowa. After becoming independently licensed in September of 2016, I made the decision to begin a private practice where I remain today.
While in my graduate program, I completed the training requirements for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Please click on the EMDR letters for information on EMDR and how I use it in practice. The training for EMDR consists of Basic Training 1 and 2 which consist of learning about the model, as well as dyadic experiential practice in using the model with clients. After the basic trainings, I completed the process of becoming certified by completing 20 hours of group and individual consultation to ensure understanding and competency to use the model. I use EMDR when it is an appropriate fit for the client.
I have taken the following follow up trainings/courses to gain additional knowledge with specific populations:
Annual Symposium of International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, including the Core Courses for Eating Disorder Treatment; March 2018
Yearly training through the Eating Disorder Coalition of Iowa which brings highly trained and knowledgeable treatment professionals to provide continuing education for therapists, doctors and dietitians who work with the eating disorder population.
Registered Yoga Training, RYT 200; completed in May of 2017. I utilize the practices from yoga to assist with breathe work, connecting with the body in a gentle manner, and gaining awareness of body sensations
Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy: Level 2
AEDP psychotherapy is an approach that seeks to alleviate patients’ psychological suffering by helping them process the overwhelming emotions associated with trauma in a way that facilitates corrective emotional and relational experiences that mobilize changes in the brain.
I have taken over 100 hours of courses to gain skill and knowledge to use this model which allows me to be present with clients in a more impactful manner and create change more effectively. I interweave many modalities into the therapeutic process, but the AEDP stance is a foundational method I use throughout.
